The Critical Years -- The Wilson Middle School
The years from ages 10 to 14 (grades 5-8) form a decisive phase in your child's
development. The body grows rapidly, and intellectual curiosity intensifies. A heightened
sense of self emerges, and values form. Critical thinking patterns evolve, and social
skills become important. Needless to say, your child's middle school experiences
will have a great influence on his
or her future success, happiness, and productivity. Thus, before enrolling your child in
any school, it makes sense to ask two questions: Is the school as supportive as it is
challenging? Is the core curriculum not only strong enough to prepare your child for the
rigors of secondary school but also flexible enough to meet his or her personal needs?
The Wilson Middle School endeavors to meet both standards. Our curriculum, while intensive
and traditional, takes learning styles into consideration and allows each student to
follow as individual a program as possible. By creating a comfortable setting in which to
develop both academically and socially, this approach is extremely effective in preparing
children of this age group for a challenging high school setting.
Our approach also calls for a partnership among the school, parents, and students.
You are kept fully apprised of your child's academic and social development and you are
encouraged to call or meet with us whenever you have questions, comments, or concerns.
This partnering relationship is one of our hallmarks.
The Middle School is also
known for its emphasis on study skills and interdisciplinary studies and on its attempt to
make these studies relevant. The curriculum focuses on English, mathematics, social
studies, science, and foreign language. A full palette of extracurricular offerings
and athletics, including soccer, baseball, fencing, swimming and volleyball, complement
the academic program.
As your son or daughter enters the critical years of learning, the school you select will
have a profound impact on his or her life well beyond the eighth grade. With that in
mind, we make every attempt to help you determine whether our philosophy and program match
your expectations and your child's needs.
The Wilson School is a place where ideas flourish and children acquire the skills and
attitudes necessary for successful passage through this critical age. Capping the Middle
School experience, individual counseling is provided for eighth grade students to place
them in appropriate day and boarding schools. |
