The Wilson School and Its Mission

Founded in 1909 by The Reverend Henry B. Wilson and his wife, Theresa L. Wilson, as an alternative to schools of the day. Over the years, The Wilson School has evolved and changed locations several times; however, the mission has stayed the same:

"To create an environment for success which will develop an independent, thoughtful and confident learner."

WilsonThe school is marked by a child-centered approach to learning employing thematic units in the Lower grades and interdisciplinary units in the Middle School. As a result of an admission process primarily aimed at parents, a strong partnering relationship between school and home exists. This system of mutual support enables the school to strive for each child to be enthusiastically at the edge of his/her ability.

The school enrolls fewer than 100 students in a coed setting from grades Pre-Kindergarten (PK) through 8th grade. The school is divided into a Lower (PK-4) and Middle School (5-8). Students generally live within a 20 mile radius from the school, and represent a diverse socio-economic, racial, ethnic, and religious population. This is by design.

A self-perpetuating Board of Trustees governs the non-profit corporation that establishes The Wilson School as an independent day school. An administration consisting of a Head of School and a Business Manager oversees daily operation of the school. The budget of the school is approximately 75% tuition-driven with the remaining resulting from development efforts.
