Where do our students go after their Wilson education?
Alumni News and Updates Alumni tell us about yourselves! Sarah Borlo Writes of her trip to Vietnam - Suddenly in Nha Trang....
So After 2 days of the chaotic Ha Noi, we were forced to escape the
intense gales and driving rain of the Typhoon. As we tried to book
our trip to Halong Bay, all tour operators exclaimed, "You are very
unlucky, TYPHOON" So we were forced to find a new destination.
Suddenly we found our selves in what seemed to be the only safe and dry place,
Nha Trang....
I was so disappointed since I was looking forward to seeing Halong Bay
for so long. However, this way we would be able to appreciate South
Central Vietnam as well as the North. I had to psych my self up and I
was looking forward to getting out of Han Noi anyway.
Han Noi is a busy place full of honking horns, no street rules and death
defying trips to cross the street. Not to mention the many banana selling
basket carrying hawkers who want you to don the yoke and traditional Viet Cone
Hat to take a picture for a small price. If these women aren't trying to
sell you banana's that I don't want someone is trying to sell you a Viet Cong Communist
Hat or a fan... None of which I am interested in buying. It is
kind of annoying but they smile and leave pleasantly only to ask you again 5
minutes later. Although aggressive in their sale, they do not become
unpleasant or nasty.
Nha Trang is your typical tourist beach. Full of aussies and
brits ready to capitalize on the snorkeling and diving tourist
industry. We were able to enjoy two full days buzzing around on scooters and
motor bikes through torrential down pours, villages, on highways, and up
and down mountains. This was fun at first but after an hour on a motor
bike with the tractor trailers wailing their horns behind you to get out of
the way, I had had enough. The scenery was pretty along the ocean
and through the rice paddies and we were both glad to be alive when it was all
over.
Although Nha Trang was relaxing with beers under the straw cabana
and a lounge chair, we were ready to get back to Ha Noi, and I never thought I
would feel that way. However there is nothing like eating beef bbq on the
street with a family of Vietnamese feeding you beer and yelling
Vietnamese Cheers at you, for HOURS!!!
Geraldine Delestienne - Out of Africa I have graduated from
Sussex University in Brighton with a BA in International Relations and
Development Studies. I took majors in Gender Relations and Agrarian Change,
Global Political Economy and War and Genocide studies. My dissertation interests paved the way for my current job
hunt as I looked at genocidal patterns of warfare in the Sudan, and
critically assessed the political economy of humanitarian relief. University
enabled me to keep busy with projects ranging from demos against torture in London
dressed as Guantanamo prisoners, running fair trade markets and
fundraising for some of our partner's special needs. I volunteered with an amazing school building project in Egyptian slums taking troubled teenagers from European council estates and orphaned youths from Egyptian SOS villages to lead an inter-Muslim and European-middle east dialogue on everything from school hassles, experiencing poverty, questioning the authority in power and terrorism- while living in slums building literacy centers. Thoughts from a few oceans and minor landmasses away...In Uganda, I've come here to meet the producers of our fair trade initiative. I work with NAWOU ( National Association of Women Of Uganda) who make crafts out of natural fibers to address issues of working to get out of poverty and gender inequalities here. I highly recommend coming here on a holiday- the animal reserves and waterfalls are stunning :) Africa's great !
